According to a study published in the December 2012 issue of Pediatrics, many more number of teens than previously thought are turning to supplements. One out of every four teen interviewed during study admitted taking protein suppliant in some form or any other muscle enhancing substance.

The study also observed that almost half of the teen have tried them at least once. Muscles building supplements already have some kind of bad reputation for causing side effects. In fact it is no brainer to say that any supplements for that matter when misused can cause harmful side effects.

Professional athletes take protein powder for muscle building. But there is a limit to how much muscles growth will happen regardless of the quantity of protein you consumed. Taking protein supplement alone is of little help unless it is combined with proper workout regime.

It is during weight lifting and other resistance activities that muscles tear and heal and as a result grow large. Building muscles require large quantity of protein, however majority of people easily obtain it from their regular food source and so there is literally no need to take supplements and powder.

Consuming large quantity of protein supplements or even if you receive it from your food alone, can be detrimental to your health. As a rule protein should not make up more than 30% of your daily calorie needs. In fact 15% is more than what is required for majority of people.

    Another common supplement for building muscle is testosterone. Even a slight increase in testosterone levels can lead to significant increases in muscle mass. Though testosterones are quite effective, they carry many side effects. Some of the common side effects include hair loss, gynecomastia, acne and prostate enlargement etc.

    Creatine

    Creatine is another supplement that is quite popular among many bodybuilders and athletes. In small quantities creatine helps increase muscle energy and achieve bursts of strengths. However excess creatine can lead your body into gaining weight at an unhealthy rate.

    According to Mayo Clinic, creatine may cause abnormal heart rate, aggression, depression, altered serum creatine levels, high blood pressure and increased risk of kidney toxicity. Long term use of creatine transforms kidney stone to ulcer. It can also cause stomach cramp, nausea and other such problems.

      Many pre-workout supplements and fat burners are common allies in an attempt to build muscles. These often contain huge quantities of caffeine and other stimulants. Researchers at Vanderbilt University observed that that popular fat burner ephedrine has many side effects including increased heart rate and blood pressure.

      In extreme cases side effects may also include heart palpitations, rhythm abnormalities, hallucinations, convulsions, mild hypertension, and even heart attack. People with any form of heart disease should not use any stimulants to boost their athletic performance. Bodybuilding supplements should always be taken on the advice of a physician. Most importantly the products you choose should be approved by FDI.
