  • Your total fat consumption each day should not exceed more than 20 to 30% of your total daily calorie intake.
  • Maintain saturated fat intake to less than 7% of your daily calorie intake.
  • Your Trans fat intake should be confined to less than 1% of your total daily calorie intake.
  • Restrict your diet to less than 200 milligrams (mg) of cholesterol each day, in case you already have high cholesterol.
  • Your sodium intake should not be more than 2,400 milligrams (mg) per day. It includes salts that you sprinkle on your food and salts that come packed with packaged foods, so don't forget to read the labels.
  • Limit you alcohol intake to one drink per day for women or two drinks or less for men.

Even healthy foods have calories and fats which can add up quickly if you are over eating. So it is imperative that you should know how much you are supposed to eat and what foods are appropriate.

    • Lean Meat: Heart healthy options include skinless chicken and turkey. Lean beef like sirloin, chuck, round, loin and pork tenderloin, or pork loin.
    • Low fat dairy options: Dairy products are full of calcium, but they are also rich in fats. There are low fat or fat free dairy products available in the market like milk, cheese, cream and yogurt.
    • Fiber: Prefer whole grain products like whole wheat bread, whole wheat pasta and brown pasta.
    • Fruits and vegetables: Fruits and vegetable are also excellent sources of dietary fiber. You should include at least 25 to 30 grams of fiber in your diet each day.
    • Fish: At least two servings of fish are recommended each week.

    Some of the things that you should avoid out right are fatty meat, high sugar drinks, processed meats, cookies, chips, and desserts. Cholesterol lowering diet is more about preparing the food the right way, eating lot of right food and knowing when to stop.
